Coming to the University of Georgia for my Masters degree in LDT has been a major step forward in my professional goals. I have been working in the Outdoor Industry in several different roles for the past 9 years. Some of those consisted of management of personal, expedition tour guide, and now most recently a graduate assistant overseeing the universities entire trips program. Getting to this point in my career has required a mix of hard technical skills in outdoor activities and a deep understanding of group dynamics and interpersonal interactions. This Masters degree has now focused my development into educational theory and how best to educate others.
My plan going forward is to stay in the field as a full time professional in a University systems outdoor department. This will allow me to continue to develop students, plan trips, and research how different training's and offerings can benefit the industry at large. I have established some baseline goals and corresponding timeline. Within the next 6 months I will be in my first professional position at a University campus rec program with the title of Coordinator. After 2-3 years I will begin to apply for Assistant Director level positions. Once I am in a stable place as an Assistant Director I will use tuition remission to begin my PHD. After acquiring a doctoral degree in either International Affairs, technology, or a related field I will attempt to transition into a full time faculty role teaching at a R1 institution.
